CURRENT EXHIBITION:
Neil Shigley // “Invisible People”

JULY 2025

Bio & Exhibit Overview:

Neil Shigley is a San Diego-based visual artist, professor, and social advocate whose work transcends the traditional role of portraiture. His celebrated series, Invisible People, presents monumental relief prints of individuals experiencing homelessness—rendered with a level of humanity, scale, and intensity that demands attention.

Each piece begins with a conversation. Neil meets and photographs his subjects on the streets, earning their trust and capturing their spirit through intimate portrait sessions. He then hand-carves their likeness into large woodblocks and creates striking relief prints that highlight every wrinkle, scar, and subtle expression—testaments to their life stories. His process is as much about presence as it is about technique, combining the physical rigor of printmaking with a deep emotional resonance.

The resulting portraits are raw, reflective, and unflinchingly honest. They are not just visual records—they’re public monuments to those our society often tries to ignore. Neil’s work urges us to acknowledge, empathize, and advocate.

Opening Night Reflections:

To celebrate the opening of Invisible People, Granada House hosted an evening of dialogue and community healing, bringing together voices from the intersection of art, advocacy, and lived experience. Speakers included:

  • Rosy Vasquez, co-founder of Community Through Hope, who spoke about the systemic roots of homelessness and the power of community-based response.
  • Sam Mazzeo, board member of Business for Good San Diego and former chair of Think Dignity’s Housing and Homelessness Committee, shared a legal and civic perspective on solutions that can create structural change.
  • Sunny and Anthony Azzarito, community advocates, led a grounding reflection on belonging and creative action.

Their words framed the artwork in the context of urgent civic conversations—about shelter, dignity, and the role of artists in bearing witness.

PAST EXHIBITION:
Tyson King // “Optimistic Abstract”

MARCH 2025

TYSON KING

Tyson King is a San Diego-based artist known for his vibrant and expressive approach to abstract painting. His work, which he describes as “optimistic abstract art,” is a testament to the transformative power of color, rhythm, and emotion. With each piece, he seeks to channel an uplifting energy that resonates beyond the canvas, engaging the viewer on a deeply personal level.

A self-taught artist, King embraces a raw and instinctual technique, allowing each brushstroke to stand boldly on its own without excessive blending or dilution. This deliberate choice amplifies the intensity of his compositions, emphasizing movement, texture, and the unfiltered expression of feeling. His work is inspired by the rhythms of everyday life—whether found in music, human interaction, or the natural world—resulting in dynamic, layered paintings that invite a dialogue between the seen and the felt.

King’s art is not just about visual appreciation; it is an immersive experience. He believes that painting is a means of communication beyond words, creating a visceral connection between his work and the audience. Rather than simply being observed, his paintings are meant to be felt—an extension of emotion, energy, and the intangible forces that shape our perception of the world. Through his distinctive style and unwavering commitment to authenticity, Tyson King continues to push the boundaries of contemporary abstract art, offering viewers a glimpse into a reality where color and movement transcend the visual and become something profoundly human.

Tyson paints not so viewers can “see his art but so they can feel it.”

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“Through this series, I hope to inspire curiosity and exploration by inviting audiences to experience the isolation, anxiety and perseverance through the vibrancy, desolation and history of the desert—and our own lives—in a new and imaginative light.

In my recent series of fluorescent-colored desert landscapes, I transform the typically stark desert into a vibrant, surreal realm. Bold hues symbolize hidden beauty and resilience, inviting viewers to see a visual delight on the surface before acknowledging a less light-hearted reality.

Mushroom clouds repeated throughout the series reflect both personal upheavals against the backdrop of global conflicts that set the stage of our current collective reality. On a personal level, they represent moments of profound change, while on a broader scale, they comment on the ongoing threat of nuclear devastation, global effects of proxy wars, and the fragility of peace.

By combining fluorescent colors and surreal imagery, I aim to challenge perceptions and highlight the duality of destruction and renewal. These landscapes become spaces for introspection, encouraging viewers to find beauty and potential even in the most challenging environments.”

BARBARA SMITH
Blue in Green

APRIL – AUGUST, 2023

Blue in Green is a series of paintings by Barbara Smith (b. 1987 Rockford, IL) that, in the tradition of color field painters and abstractionists, attempts to display a purity of pigment and expression. Each painting was improvised not unlike a jazz tune, and each painting has a song or series of songs “embedded” in them.  In the course of painting, Barbara attempts to connect with feelings of euphoria, fear, mania, grief, lust, balance, loss, love, and peace.
